Sekigahara
is a three-hour, low-complexity block wargame based on Tokugawa's campaign in 1600 that would unify Japan for over 250 years.

The game features some unusual mechanisms:

  • No dice are used; combat is decided with cards. Blocks = armies & cards = motivation. The combination of army and motivation produces impact on the battlefield. Armies without matching cards don't fight.
  • Legitimacy is represented by hand size, which fluctuates each week according to the number of castles a player holds.
  • The initial setup is variable, so the situation is always fresh. Concealed information (blocks and cards) lends additional uncertainty. In this way it 'feels' something like an actual campaign.
  • Each player must rally the several daimyo of his coalition, managing the morale and motivation of each clan. The forces are dispersed, and while there are reasons to unify them, the objectives are also dispersed (and the time frame compact) so skirmishing will occur all over the island.

Great game. Stylish and great battle mechanism. Easy to learn, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to win. Requires very strategic planning. I love it.

Sekigahara

One of the best games that I have played in my over 55 years of board gaming experience. Elegant, and makes you make many tough decisions often with unexpected results.

Favourite war game

This is such a blast to play. If you can find someone to play longer games with and they're up for lots of battling then this game is probably worth looking at.

Tense. Very tense

I agree wholeheartedly with the earlier reviewers. In addition I'd like to recommend Sekigahara to first time wargamers and anyone who likes to bluff. The rules are very approachable and intuitive. The block and card interaction takes the fog of war common in block games to the next level. Excruciating, in a good way.

Surprisingly Re-playable

I've played this 5 or 6 times now. I assumed that since the setup is static and the winning conditions never change that games would play out in a similar fashion. Happily, that isn't the case at all. Card play has a lot to do with that. It is quite tactical, as the right battle at the right time can tip things in your favour.

One of my absolute favorites.
