Designer Eric Lang, known for his "dudes on a map" games, describes The Godfather: Corleone's Empire — a standalone big box board game with high-quality miniatures — as "thugs on a map".

In short, the game is a streamlined, confrontational worker placement game filled with murder and intrigue. In long, you play as competing mafia families who are vying for economic control of the organized crime networks of New York City, deploying your thugs, your don, your wife, and your heir on the board to shake down businesses and engage in area-control turf wars.

Money, rackets, contracts, and special advantages (such as the union boss) are represented by cards in your hand, and your hand size is limited, with you choosing which extra cards to pay tribute to the don at the end of each of the five rounds. At the end of the game, though, cash is all that matters, and whoever has the most money wins.

The game also features drive-by shootings in which enemy tokens are removed from the board and placed face-down in the river. The don of that family member must play cards to fish their guys out of the river and return them to duty on the New York battlefield.

So so game

This game is just ok. A bit bland. It has nothing to do with The Godfather....

Rated 1/5.- BARGAIN BIN TRASH

DESIGN & ARTWORKThe board game artwork and game cards are all themed from The Godfather movies. Fonts used give some semblance to the 1920s. There is heavy use of black in the color scheme, but card artwork of guns, booze, bloody money and jobs is extremely basic and uninspiring.COMPONENTSMiniatures were done well, but the amount of detail and variety is less from other CMON titles such as ZOMBICIDE and THE OTHERS.GAMEPLAYThe Godfather is a light worker placement game with area control, with the objective to collect resources, control territory and translate that into cash. There is strategy involved in board positioning and timing and that's really the core of the game. The job cards offer bonuses and game effects but can easily be exploited as a "delay tactic", but there is limited variety in the jobs themselves. With 3+ players the game will offer more strategic choices, but will quickly become a resource grinding chore to complete jobs versus controlling territory. OVERALL VALUE For the price you're paying, there are many things wrong with The Godfather game that shadow the overall verdict.- Card artwork and miniature quality is subpar. - The limited job options make the game quickly repetitive.- The Godfather theme has no real effect on the game, which is puzzling. Are we simply paying more for The Godfather name vs. President's Choice No Name Mafia Game?Save your money. Wait for a sale, or better yet, buy a used copy.
