America in the 19th century: You are a rancher and repeatedly herd your cattle from Texas to Kansas City, where you send them off by train. This earns you money and victory points. Needless to say, each time you arrive in Kansas City, you want to have your most valuable cattle in tow. However, the "Great Western Trail" not only requires that you keep your herd in good shape, but also that you wisely use the various buildings along the trail. Also, it might be a good idea to hire capable staff: cowboys to improve your herd, craftsmen to build your very own buildings, or engineers for the important railroad line.

If you cleverly manage your herd and navigate the opportunities and pitfalls of Great Western Trail, you surely will gain the most victory points and win the game.

Super engaging

This is one of my favourite games. I've never won it, but I've also never come to close to caring, as I'm enjoying planning out my journey and strategy. The game can take a little while the first few times, but regular players can go through their turns super quickly. The type of game that stimulates your thinking, and has everyone talking about their strategies after it's all said and done. There is a 2nd edition on the way, which certainly has a better look cover, but this remains an absolute gem.

Keep getting better and better through plays. You are building an engine and play off combos every turn, the game is very satisfying

Great game!

The cover & theme looked/sounded dull to me at first, but the great gameplay quickly won me over. So many interesting approaches & choices, and choosing the buildings, workers, stations, etc. all makes for very interesting player interaction. Great with even just 2 players. It's easy to see why it's ranked so highly on BGG & on so many people's Top Games lists.

Must Have

Wow! I don't know what to say about this game, it's pretty fantastic. It's hard to label it into a certain category. It's a deck builder, it's a worker placement/movement, it's a race, you get to build as well! There's a lot going on here that may make the game look complex, but really gameplay is quite simple. And all your options for actions are delightful goodies! No action is terrible, but it's in your best interest to pick the best action. There are so many strategic routes you can take in this game, based on the type of workers you hire. But you can also merge strategies together. No reply of this game ever makes it feel boring or like you're doing the same thing over and over. And by switching up starting tiles and your own building tiles you can change up the difficulty just a tad. Swimming in strategy and fun, this is a gamers game and should not be overlooked due to theme! You'll thank me later, add to cart and click check out!
